Allwinner will see Over Twenty VR All-In-One HMDs

Allwinner: Over Twenty VR All-In-One HMDs will Come

Let me say up front that I’m not a fan of Allwinner. For that matter, I’m not a fan of anyCPU coming from China. Rockchip, MediaTek, Allwinner, ACTIONS are the big names. They all crapped out in the tablet market with their second-gen CPUs and many of their partners abandoned them for Intel. MediaTek is prominent now but if you read XDA Developers, that CPU is something people should avoid (and poor Sony is now using their CPUs!).

Anyway, the indefatigable Charbax has a video from Computex 2016 and Allwinner says they have over twenty partners ready to flood the market with all-in-one VR Head-Mounted Devices based on their CPU and board.

Finished products are expected to weigh 300 grams or less, with playback primarily of 4K video at 60 fps for around three hours using a 3,000mAh battery. The focus is on video as Allwinner doesn’t yet believe current technology (which would have to include theirs) is good enough for games. The CPU is based on an ARM v7 and is octa-core.

Despite these being all-in-one HMDs, Allwinner classifies them as “mobile VR” despite not using a phone. Perhaps “untethered VR” would be a better marketing term.

In this chart, they predict AIO (all-in-one) HMDs to dominate the market by 2020:

Their H8vr PCB design:

Look at the crazy array of ports:

4K video at 60fps with less heat is their claim:

Their VR CPU roadmap:

We’ll see if that actually works out. After their A80 CPU for tablets, there was nothing.

And a single fish-eye lens camera that partners are also producing:

The footage can be seen on a partner HMD.

I’d rather have an AIO HMD instead of inserting and pulling out a phone from a visor. But I’m very skeptical that a China company will provide the best experience.

And there’s no word in this video of what the screen resolution will be — and if these are HMDs with single screens or per-eye screens.
