3 Best Firewall Apps for Android to Security Your Device 2019

If Internet security is not your cup of tea, then the word “firewall” might sound like something very bad, and certainly not something you’d want to install on your Android smartphone or tablet! Fear not – a firewall is actually a good thing, a protective tool that keeps your device safe from viruses and some kinds of malicious attacks. In civil engineering and architecture, a firewall is a wall that’s designed specifically to be highly resistant to combustion, and it keeps a building from burning down entirely if one part happens to catch on fire, Similarly, most modern computing devices have some form of firewall built in, as a security protection that keeps your device safe and secure as it performs its typical duties around the web and within its own processing. Your device’s firewall acts as a network security system, monitoring incoming and outgoing data and traffic between your phone and the web based on predetermined (either by the user or by the device itself) security protocols. While a firewall is far more necessary on a personal computer, desktop, or laptop than on a tablet or phone running Android, some Android users might find a firewall handy when browsing outside of their own WiFi connection in order to protect their devices from viruses and other nasty software floating on the web.

Whether you’re concerned about security on your mobile device, or you’re just looking to lock down your phone or tablet for additional comfort, a firewall downloaded from the Play Store can be a great solution to an unfortunate problem. Between iOS and Android, we’ve found Android to be the more open of the two platforms, allowing for a bit more freedom and customizability overall when using the device. Unfortunately, this also means some added security concerns, since no device is ever perfectly safe from malware or security vulnerabilities.

Android’s gotten a lot more secure lately, with monthly security patches typically rolling out on time as expected for the majority of flagship phones. If you’re still concerned about your data and phone being unprotected, a firewall might be able to give you some peace of mind. Let’s take a look at our favorite firewall apps on the Play Store right now.

Our Recommendation:

NoRoot Firewall

DOWNLOAD

NoRoot Firewall is one of our favorite firewall apps on the Play Store right now. Like the name suggests, NoRoot functions entirely without needing you to root your phone, making it easy to take control of your device's network connections even if your phone isn't rooted. The app isn't quite as fully-featured as what we've seen from other apps, but it does make it easy to allow or deny your applications to connect to your wireless network. Let's take a look.

The first thing you'll note after starting up NoRoot is the requirement to start the app as a VPN connection, which will require a permission from you, the user, to allow. We've covered VPNs, or virtual private networks, on TechJunkie extensively, but essentially these programs reroute your data through a specific network allowing you some additional privacy, security, and in this case, monitoring of your information. Once you enable NoRoot as a VPN, you'll see a notification in your status bar at the top of your screen displaying a key-shaped icon. This means your phone is rerouting traffic through NoRoot's own VPN, exactly what we're looking for in this app.

By default, NoRoot Firewall will require you to vet each app individually, allowing only trusted apps to access the internet through your data connection. You can set each app individually for both WiFi connections and 4G or wireless data connections, making it easy to determine on an app-by-app basis on whether you do or don't want an application connecting over unprotected networks. It's a bit frustrating to have each app be opt-in instead of opt-out, since most users will probably want their phones to use specific application data instead of having each app unable to connect to the internet, especially since system apps like Android System are included in the app's lineup. Still, it is a security app first and foremost, and having users go through the entire list will certainly lead to additional security and less apps accessing your network overtime.

Beyond allowing apps on a global basis, NoRoot Firewall also allows you to approve apps that are pending access. Basically, any app that tries to use your data will have to go through a process of looking for your approval, which means apps like Facebook, Gmail, or Twitter can't load data in the background unless you hit the allow button inside NoRoot. This makes it easy to see what apps are and aren't trying to gain network access.

That said, the app is fairly fully-featured. In addition to both the Pending Access and Apps tabs, you can also set both global filters and view a large list of your access logs, complete with IP Addresses, dates, and times of when your network was accessed. Global Filters allow you to set both pre- and post-filters for your internet access, meaning you can control how your data works both before and after you access a particular site or network. These global filters aren't the easiest to set up, but there is an easy "Help" access icon on the display if you are confused on how to set up the app. Using a filter makes it easy to approve or deny blanket networks, so your work network can be disabled while your home network enabled, making it easy to connect to the web how you want, instead of how your phone wants. The access log goes hand in hand here, since it'll display the networks used to connect to certain applications and programs.

NoRoot is a quality app that allows for greater control over your network-based applications, something we really appreciate having on a device as unsecured as our smartphones. The app is completely free, though it's worth noting that both NoRoot and its beta counterpart haven't seen updates since the end of 2014, nearly guaranteeing a dead application as far as future development goes. Still, if you know what you're looking for in a firewall app, NoRoot can hit nearly every mark we're looking for in an application. It's a great, free app for controlling your network output, and definitely worth downloading.

Runner Up:

Mobiwol: NoRoot Firewall

DOWNLOAD

Like NoRoot, Mobiwol will require access on your phone to setup a VPN network before setup and normal operation begins. The app is designed to reroute traffic through the rules you set for your own device, making your device safer as it goes. The app, much like NoRoot, has five sections: Rules, Connection Logs, Settings, Data Usage, and of course, Privacy Protection Logs. Unlike some of the other apps on this list, though, Mobiwol is really easy to setup. Everything you need is typically found in Rules, allowing you to set the guidelines as needed within the app. As with other firewall apps, you can limit their operation over WiFi, wireless data, or both, while also setting the limitation of foreground-only operation, blocking the app from using background data that can run up your data usage or battery life. Your logs can be found under both Privacy Protection and Connection Logs, depending on what you're looking for, and the Data Usage tab will allow you to monitor your apps' data usage over your wireless networks. The app is still regularly updated, with version 5.51 rolling out in April of 2018. Mobiwol is trusted by over half a million users, and is definitely worth checking out for active, in-development firewall applications. Oh, and you won't need root for this one either.

Everyone else

Netguard

DOWNLOAD

When it comes to design, Netguard is probably our favorite firewall application out there right now. The green-and-orange theme gives it a much more fun vibe than any of the other applications on the list, and the design feels far more modern than what we've grown used to expect from security applications. The app is also routinely updated—in fact, it was last updated just a month before we updated this articled (August of 2018). The app comes with a huge number of recommendations, including from popular mobile carrier Ting, for protecting and stopping your apps from accessing your cellular data. Netguard allows you to ban every app from using your mobile data, making it ideal for prepaid or smaller carriers where you're encouraged to use low amounts of data. The app doesn't require root, is open-source, and is really easy to use for even the newest smartphone adopters. Each app has an icon next to it referencing mobile data and WiFi access. You can control each app independently, and Netguard ensures that you can view offline data while on 3G or 4G while simultaneously saving you battery and data. Netguard does have some pro features, in-app purchases, and ads, but it's nothing too extreme. It's a great app if you're looking for a design-focused network controller or firewall.

iOS 12 untethered jailbreak demonstrated by Pandora Labs

iOS 12 untethered jailbreak demonstrated by Pandora Labs

Renowned security team Pandora Lab recently demonstrated an iOS 12 jailbreak. Check out the video demonstration of the jailbreak below.

Will Pandora Labs release an iOS 12 jailbreak tool to the public?

iOS 12 jailbroken within 24 hours of its release

Within 24 hours of its release, security experts at the Ali Security Pandora Labs were able to jailbreak iOS 12. This jailbreak is fully untethered – meaning your device stays in jailbreak mode after a reboot.

According to the team, developing a jailbreak requires digging into the system to discover vulnerabilities to gain elevated access.

Researchers then utilize these security vulnerabilities to break through the system’s signature to bypass codesigning and mount the root filesystem as read/write.

The team of veteran security researchers posted the following video on its YouTube account.

In the demo video, a Pandora Lab team member unlocks what possibly looks like an iPhone X, an A11 device.

Afterward, the hacker goes to Settings to show off the firmware version of the device and immediately opens the jailbreak app called “Pandora”, and then finishes a few final steps to completion.

Pandora Labs exploit the codesigning mechanism of iOS 12

According to Pandora Labs, iOS 12 patches the “AMFID signature hijacking” and “Fake trust cache” techniques for defeating codesigning.

Furthermore, Apple’s latest operating system also patches “forged valid mnt_data” and “delete /disk0s1s1 snapshot” techniques for accessing the root directory as read/write.

Yossi, a security researcher at Pandora Labs, claims that while Apple patches a lot of bugs and add new mitigation mechanisms each year, they are yet to fully secure their mobile operating system.

Even a firmware as secure as iOS 12 has plenty of vulnerabilities present; for instance, in signature checking and root filesystem. Attackers can easily make use of these security holes to bypass modern mitigation mechanisms.

iOS 12 moves the AMFI trust cache chain to a new area in the kernel to mitigate codesigning attacks. However, the system verifies only one of the two trust chain cache signatures whereas others still remain open to attackers.

Will Pandora Labs release an iOS 12 jailbreak tool to the public?

Just like Pandora Labs’ previous jailbreaks, this jailbreak will never see the light of day. It is a private jailbreak tool and the team will likely use it to claim a princely bounty from Apple.

For those who are new to the jailbreak scene, untethered or persistent exploits are worth their weight in gold and can easily fetch millions of dollars if sold to the right buyer.Gihosoft Photo Eraser Erase unwanted objects and perfect your amazing photos!

With that being said, hackers Coolstar and Umang Raghubanshi possess some juicy zero-day vulnerabilities for iOS 12. Luca Todesco also has something cooking, so to speak, for the final version of iOS 12.

Once the iOS 12 ecosystem matures and more users jump onto the firmware, the hackers will surely be able to churn something out.

iPhone Xs Max vs Samsung Galaxy Note 9

iPhone Xs Max vs Samsung Galaxy Note 9: What’s the Difference

With the iPhone XS Max, Apple now once again has a proper bezel-less contender to Samsung’s Galaxy Note 9. The iPhone X with its 5.8-inch display was simply not big enough for people who want a massive screen on their smartphone.

The iPhone XS Plus fills that voids and takes on Samsung’s latest Note, the Galaxy Note 9. Samsung has had a pretty average 2018, with its flagship Galaxy S9 failing to set the sales chart on fire. The initial response to the company’s Galaxy Note 9 has been positive though thanks to its improved battery life, big and beautiful display, and excellent cameras.

So, how does the iPhone XS Plus compare to the Galaxy Note 9? Let’s find out in our comparison.

iPhone Xs Max vs Samsung Galaxy Note 9: What’s the Difference
Display

iPhone Xs Max – 6.5-inch True Tone OLED, 2688 x 1242 pixels (458 ppi), 3D Touch, HDR10, Dolby Vision, 3D Touch

Galaxy Note 9 – 6.4-inch curved OLED, 1440 x 2960 pixels (516 ppi), HDR10, Dolby Vision

The Galaxy Note 9 is massive by all means. It comes with a massive 6.4-inch QHD+ Super AMOLED display that is curved on its edges and has a pixel density of 516 ppi. It is not a bezel-less display though, with there being a small chin at the top and bottom. This gives the Galaxy Note 9 a body-to-screen ratio of 83.51 percent. In comparison, the iPhone XS Max comes with a 6.5-inch notched display with a 500 ppi. While the pixel density is lower than that of Note 9, the iPhone XS Max manages to fit a bigger display in its compact chassis.

The OLED panels on both devices are among the best in the market. The Galaxy Note 9’s OLED panel has already been crowned by Display Mate as having the best smartphone display on the market right now, though given how the iPhone X’s display performed last year, the iPhone Xs Max will likely take that crown or come very close to snatching it.
Design

iPhone Xs Max – 157.5 x 77.4 x 7.7 mm and 208g, IP68 certified

Galaxy Note 9 – 161.9 x 76.4 x 8.8mm and 201g, IP68 certified

The Galaxy Note 9 is taller and thicker than the iPhone Xs Max, though it is not as wide as Apple’s offering. This makes the Note 9 the bulkier of the two handsets, with the notch-less display also making the device more difficult to use with one-hand. While both phones feature a glass design, the iPhone Xs Max features a stainless steel chassis which has a far more premium feel to it when compared to the aluminum chassis of the Galaxy Note 9. Both phones are also IP68 dust and water-resistant, though the iPhone Xs IP certification is slightly better.

Processor

iPhone Xs Max – A12 Bionic, 7nm chip, 6-core CPU which is 15 percent faster, 50 percent faster 4-core GPU, 8-core Neural engine

Galaxy Note – Octa-core Exynos 9810/Snapdragon 845 chip running at 2.7/2.8GHz, 2nd gen 10nm chip,

The Galaxy Note 9 comes with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845/Exynos 9810 chipset which are the absolute fastest chips you can find in the Android ecosystem. However, none of them hold a candle against Apple’s A12 which is an absolute monster in terms of performance. The A12 Bionic chip inside the iPhone Xs Max is the at the absolute bleeding edge of the technology with its 8-core Neural engine, 7nm fabrication process, and 6-core CPU. In this department, the Galaxy Note 9 is simply nowhere close to what Apple offers with the iPhone Xs Max.
Camera

iPhone Xs Max – Dual 12MP camera setup with f/1.8 and f/2.4 aperture, new sensor with 1.4um pixel pitch, OIS for both sensors, Smart HDR, Focus Pixels, Portrait mode with advanced bokeh and Depth control

Galaxy Note 9 – Dual 12MP camera with variable f/1.5 and f/2.4 aperture, 1.4um pitch pixel, dual OIS, Auto HDR, SuperSpeedAF, Live Focus with adjustable bokeh effect

The rear camera setup of both handsets in similar in many ways. They both feature a primary 12MP wide-angle lens paired with a secondary 12MP telephoto lens. The Note 9’s primary sensor features a wider f/1.5 aperture and variable aperture, the iPhone Xs Max has Smart HD which should allow it to capture more details and offer better dynamic range. Both phones offer depth control for portrait mode, though the iPhone Xs Max offers more features. The iPhone Xs Max is also a better video shooter than the Galaxy Note 9 with stereo sound recording support.

Front Camera

iPhone Xs Max – 7MP TrueDepth Camera, f/2.2 aperture, Retina Flash, Portrait mode with advanced bokeh and Depth control, Smart HDR

Galaxy Note 9 – 8MP, f1/7, Autofocus, Screen Flash, Portrait mode

The Galaxy Note 9 has a higher resolution selfie camera with autofocus and a wider f/1.7 aperture. However, Samsung ends up destroying most of the selfies the Note 9 captures by applying gracious amounts of smoothening and sharpening. The iPhone Xs, in comparison, captures more natural looking selfies.

Storage

iPhone Xs Max – 64GB, 256GB, 512GB

Galaxy Note 9 – 128GB, 512GB, microSD card slot

If there’s one department where the Galaxy Note 9 wins over the iPhone Xs Max, its storage. While the base variant of the iPhone Xs ships with 64GB storage, Samsung offers the base Galaxy Note 9 with 128GB of storage. And then there’s also the microSD card slot on the device which accepts cards of up to 512GB. So, if you want the maximum storage, buy the 512GB storage variant of the Note 9 and insert another 512GB SD card for a total storage space of 1TB.

The Galaxy Note 9 also comes with 6GB RAM which is more than what the iPhone Xs comes with (4GB). The 512GB variant comes with 2x the RAM of iPhone Xs Max at 8GB.
Connectivity

iPhone Xs Max – Dual SIM/eSIM, Gigabit LTE, Wi-Fi ac with MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, VoLTE, NFC with reader mode

Galaxy Note 9 – Dual SIM, 1.2Gbps LTE, Wi-Fi ac with MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, VoLTE, NFC

This is a key area where the Galaxy Note 9 reigns supreme over the iPhone Xs Max. The Galaxy Note 9 not only comes with two traditional SIM card slots, it also supports faster 1.2Gbps LTE download speeds. The iPhone Xs offers Gigabit LTE support at best.
Battery Life and Charging

iPhone Xs Max – 90 minutes better than iPhone X, 7.5W wireless charging, 18W wired charging

Galaxy Note 9 – 4,000mAh battery, 10W Fast wireless charging, 15W wired charging

The iPhone Xs Max should offer better battery life than the Galaxy Note 9 since it comes with a more power efficient A12 Bionic chip. While the Galaxy Note 9 might offer inferior battery life, it does have one key advantage. Despite coming with a slower wired charging (15W), Samsung actually bundles a 15W adapter with the Note 9. Apple, on the other hand, continues to bundle a measly 5W charger with the iPhone Xs Max despite it supporting 18W fast charging.
Pricing

iPhone Xs Max – Starts from $1,099

Galaxy Note 9 – Starts from $999

While the base variant of the Galaxy Note 9 starts from $999, one can easily get it for a couple of hundred bucks lower price. If not, most retailers usually sweeten the deal by offering a free Galaxy watch or wireless charger. The iPhone Xs Max, on the other hand, starts from $1,099 and goes all the way up to $1,449. The 8GB Note 9 variant carries a retail price of $1,250 which ultimately makes it a far more attractive proposition in terms of value for money when compared to the iPhone Xs Max.

The Galaxy Note 9 obviously comes with an S-Pen which is unique to the device. It is something that will only appeal to a certain section of users though.

What do you think about the Galaxy Note 9 and iPhone Xs Max? Between the two, which one would you prefer? Drop a comment and let us know!

How to Set Parental Controls in Android for Kids

How to Set Parental Controls in Android for Kids

A lot of debate is going on about what's the right age to let your kids have their smartphones. Bill Gates thinks it is 14 which is not until high school. Not sure if most parents will be able to stop their kids until that age.

A few days back, my nephew refused to finish his dinner until he was allowed to play his favorite game. Tricky situation, eh? As a parent, you don’t want to ruin their innocence with violent, adult or abusive content. At the same time, you can't stop them from using smartphones to access YouTube, social media or play games. You may also like:jihosoft iphone data recovery

While it is becoming increasingly harder to prevent kids from getting addicted to the phones, there are ways to set parental controls in Android to protect them from harmful content. Let’s see what we can do.

1. CREATE RESTRICTED PROFILE

If you own a Samsung smartphone, you may not see the option to create a new user account. This is because some manufacturers disable this feature for the reasons best known to them. Depending on the make and model of your phone, you may have it enabled on your device. If not, jump to the next point. You may also like:jihosoft iphone data recovery

Open Settings on your phone and go to Users. You will see two user accounts already created. One with your name and one for Guest. Click on Add User to create a new Kids profile. You will see a general disclaimer. Click OK.You may also like:jihosoft iphone data recovery

Setup screen will appear and you will be asked to connect with your Wi-Fi network.

Name your new profile anything you want and accept Google ToS agreement in the next screen.

At this point, you will see a few additional options, one of which is a new Google account. You can create a Google account for your kid to keep his/her apps separate from your account. This will also prevent them from accidentally using your credit card linked to the Play Store. Hit complete when done.

You will see a new Android home screen with none of your apps visible. Go ahead and install new apps that are suitable for your kids.

You can quickly switch between user accounts from the notification area.

Let’s see how you can set up a restricted area for kids if the default option to create new profiles in Android is disabled.
2. THIRD-PARTY APP

Apart from the built-in restricted profile feature, there are third-party apps that offer parental control options with even more features. Kids Place is one such app. Download (link at the end of this section) and install the app from the Play Store.

When you open the app for the first time, you will be asked to create a 4 digit PIN. Don’t use your car’s license plate number or any other obvious ones. The kids are smarter than you think.

On the next screen, you will have to enter your email id and password hint.

Once inside, you can control pretty much every aspect of your phone. Click on Settings. You will be asked to re-enter the PIN you just created which means the kids can’t change the settings. Once inside, click on Parental Controls.

Here, you can lock the home button so the kid can’t exit an app without your permission. The app that he is using can be forced to restart if he/she exits it by mistake or deliberately. If a game can be played offline, you can disable all wireless connections.

There's an option to force the Kids Place app to restart by default if the device is rebooted. You can lock the notification area, so your messages are safe. Every single app can be locked or whitelisted.

The app's Pro version offers even more options like setting a timer, setting Internet access for specific apps, changing app names, and other UI settings. All of this for a one-time payment of $10. Not bad.
