Chromebooks with Kaby Lake, Apollo Lake chips on the way (leaks)

Intel’s 7th-gen Core “Kaby Lake” processors are starting to show up in Windows laptops, and soon you may also be able to buy a Chromebook with a Kaby Lake chip.
Or if you’d rather have a model with a low-power processor, it looks like new models with Intel’s Celeron and Pentium “Apollo Lake” chips are on the way too.
While Google and its partners haven’t announced any Kaby Lake or Apollo Lake Chromebooks yet, a series of leaks suggest that they’re under development.



Chrome Unboxed spotted details about a new Chrome board code-named “Eve” which features a 7th-gen Intel Core processor. The leak comes courtesy of Google’s Chromium source code, where there’s also amention of “tablet mode,” which would suggest the laptop will have a touchscreen display… and may even be a convertible notebook with a 360 degree hinge or a detachable keyboard.

Details about the upcoming Apollo Lake model come courtesy of a Geekbench listing spotted by Roland Quandt.

It shows a device code-named “Google Reef,” which features a Pentium N4200 quad-core processor and 8GB of RAM.

I wouldn’t read too much into the fact that this board has “Google” in its name, but I certainly wouldn’t be disappointed if this turns out to be a next-gen Chromebook Pixel. While previous models in that line have had Intel Core i5 or i7 chips, they’ve also had high price tags. If Google opts for a Pentium chip for its next model, it could be a sign that the device will be a bit more affordable.

Geekbench says the Reef system is running Android 6.0.1, but that makes sense since a growing number of Chromebooks feature an Android subsystem that allows them to run Android apps.
