Mobile operator Orange has joined forces with Gemalto to launch the Samsung Gear S2 Classic 3G in France. It is the first connected watch with a built-in Sim. The SIM card is directly built into the product so you are not required to do anything with the SIM card. The watch is activated directly by the operator.
With 3G connectivity, users can receive calls, messages and mobile applications notifications. It also incorporates a GPS, a heart rate monitor and 4GB of memory to store music.
The Gear S2 3G smartwatch is compatible with Android smartphones and is available forEUR 399.99 at selected Orange stores. Orange recommends mobile customers to subscribe to the Multi-SIM Calls & Internet option for EUR 5 per month plus a EUR 10 activation fee to get the maximum out of the device.
Laetitia Orsini-Sharps, Marketing Director, Consumer Access Offers for Orange France was quoted as saying:
"We are delighted to launch this connected watch with a built-in SIM with Gemalto and Samsung and to offer our customers the very best of innovation. From now, our customers remain connected even when leaving their smartphone at home (doing sporting activities, or need to run a quick errand without having to carry their smartphones...). They will get incoming calls and notifications wherever they go"
It’s currently unclear if the mobile operator will be charging customers any additional usage fees to switch over to the SIM, but even if its there it will be a nominal charge we guess.
