The entire reason VR saw a resurgence was Oculus creating the idea of a $300 VR headset. That’s not a small amount of money, but it’s affordable enough that those interested could at least consider it. It was a good price point. Then feature and spec creep set in, and that price ballooned, and neither HTC nor Sony (with its PlayStation VR) seemed inclined on fighting that swelling.
Now it’s clear that we’ll have two choices in virtual reality: extremely expensive system-tethered headsets loaded with features, or inexpensive but underwhelming plastic shells for your cell phone. There will be Google Cardboard-tier and there will be Oculus Rift tier, and the difference in price between the two will be measured in magnitudes.
