LG G5 Goes Official with new design at MWC 2016
We knew for some time now that LG would announce its newest flagship at MWC 2016 at Barcelona. We are present at the show and we had the chance to check out the brand new LG G5 first hand and learn everything about it. There are of course updated internals, but the biggest change this year comes from the design.
LG G5 – New Design
I usually like to start with the specs of a device when it is announced but this time it’s different because the design of the LG G5 is the main point of interest. LG ditched the plastic build and opted for a metal unibody finish for its newest flagship, but that doesn’t mean you lose the swappable battery and microSD card slot expansion. The way LG managed to combine everything together is with its new modular design. The bottom of the phone slides out and you can access the battery and remove it if you like.
That modular design gives LG the opportunity to work with third party hardware manufacturers an create some very interesting add-ons for the LG G5. Such add-ons include a camera module that offers more control over your shots and an extra speaker that includes a 32-bit DAC for better audio performance. This concept seems extremely promising. My only concern is how well the mechanism will hold over time, but we’ll have to wait and see for that in the future.
LG G5 – Specs
Now let’s talk specs. While last year LG made the safer bet of going with the Snapdragon 808 over the 810, this year the LG G5 is equipped with the best chip available from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 820. The CPU is cmbined with 4GB of RAM and the Adreno 530 GPU. The screen of the phone is 5,3″ in size and had the familiar Quad HD resolution of 2560×1440 pixels. LG has also given the screen an “Always On” feature where part of the screen reaming active to show notifications.
LG G5 – Camera
Another big point in LG’s Keynote was the camera. Specifically, the dual camera setup that we find at the back of the phone. The “regular” sensor offers stills at 16MP resolution, but the secondary sensor offers extremely wide shots at 8MP. What you miss in resolution, the extra content in the shot makes it worth it. With such a wide angle lens though there is a fisheye efect in the photos just like a GoPro for example.
Closing, I’d like to mention that the LG G5 has a fingerprint senson at the back just below the camera button. The sensor is also the power button of the device, but the volume rocker has now moved to the side. Lastly, the LG G5 will come with Android 6.0 Marshmallow and the LG UI 5.0 running on top. The biggest difference this time around is that the stock launcher does not offer an app drawer.
At this time we don’t know neither the exact date of release nor the price, but stay tuned for that info in the future.
