Faroe Island puts cameras on sheep for 360 degree mapping

The islands’ tourism board is using the four-legged photographers, to document their mountainous terrain. The brainchild of Visit Faroe Islands employee Durita Dahl Andreassen,Sheep View 360 sends photos along with GPS co-ordinates to the island's tourist board, making it easier to map their area, which they upload to Google Street View. So far the island has mapped image of five locations on the island and have also recorded a 360 degree video for exploring the island. "With the 360 camera gently mounted on the back of a sheep, combined with a mobile phone and some solar panels, the sheep can walk around in the landscape and record pictures,” Visit Faroe Islands states in a release.

The project was launched after the island's tourist board unsuccessfully tried to petition Google to come and document their beautiful terrain. “Here in the Faroe Islands we have to do things our way,” Andreassen stated. “Knowing that we are so small and Google is so big, we felt this was the thing to do.”
