Researchers achieve Camera Lens breakthrough

A breakthrough in camera lens technology, by researchers at Harvard could lead tosmartphones that will outperform DSLR's.
Researchers at Harvard have come up with a completely new technology called 'meta lenses'that could bring drastic changes to cameras, smartphones and microscopes. The new meta lenses will reduce the size of a telephoto lens to the size of a small lens that can be fitted to a smartphone.
The metalenses employ a layer microscopic miniature towers prepared from titanium dioxidearranged in a perfect way to focus the color and light in a similar way as current cameras do, however it will make them smaller than human hair and weigh almost nothing.
The new technology will also reduce the cost of producing camera lenses to a fraction of the current cost as they will be small, like tiny microchips and don't have to go through the strict manufacturing regulations and procedures that glass lenses have to go through. As the new lenses would be the size of micro chips, the cost of manufacturing them would be almost nothing.
Producing these metalenses would be a very simple process and will cost nothing. It will use the same techniques used for microchips. By making the size of the lens small, users will not have to carry heavy DSLR's everywhere; instead the technology will be squeezed into a smartphone. The new technology will disrupt the smartphone industry with cheaper camera lenses delivering DSLR like images.
