Apple will bring its mobile payment service to customers in Switzerland on Monday, June 13th. The date happens to coincide with Apple’s next keynote event at the start of its annual Worldwide developers conference that same day at 10 a.m., which would be an opportune time for Apple to announce expanded Apple Pay availability.
Apple Pay potentially reaching Switzerland follows a recent promise from the company to rapidly expand into more markets across Europe and Asia as well as reports of slow adoption outside of the US. To date, Apple’s mobile payment service is available to customers in theUnited States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Mainland China, and Singapore. Its debut in Switzerland will mark the seventh country where the mobile payments service is available.
Apple Pay lets you make secure payments in stores using your iPhone or Apple Watch in place of a physical credit card that is easier to intercept. Purchases can also be made in apps on iPhones and iPads using Apple Pay.
Swiss private bank Cornèr Bank will purportedly be one of the first participating issuers in Switzerland. It’s not clear if the country's two big banks UBS and Credit Suisse will also support Apple Pay upon launch. If they're not participating at launch, they could sign up later on.
Apple is working rapidly to expand the service to additional regions, including Hong Kong and Spain, and possibly France, Brazil, and Japan, in partnership with American Express, MasterCard, Visa, and other payment processors.
