Report: Apple Overstates iPhone XR Battery Life by 51 Percent
A new report from Which? claims that Apple has been overstating the battery life of the iPhone XR by almost 50 percent. In its testing, Which? tested nine different iPhone models and all of them lasted anywhere between 18 percent to 51 percent less than Apple’s claimed figures.
The iPhone XR, which offers the longest battery life among the 2018 iPhone lineup, lasted for 16 hours and 32 minutes in the talk time test. This is 51 percent less than Apple’s claimed talk time of 25 hours.
Apple has already responded to the report and claims that it stands behind the battery life claims of its products which it makes after its own testing.
“We rigorously test our products and stand behind our battery life claims. With tight integration between hardware and software, iPhone is engineered to intelligently manage power usage to maximize battery life. Our testing methodology reflects that intelligence.
Which? haven’t shared their methodology with us so we can’t compare their results to ours. We share our methodology for testing which we publish in detail here https://www.apple.com/iphone/battery.html.”
For its testing, Which? independently purchased new iPhones, charged them to their full capacity and then tested how long they would last while on a call.
Which? also tested the battery life claims of HTC smartphones and while they also fell short of promised talk time, the difference was only around 5 percent.
Interestingly, smartphones from Sony, Nokia, and Samsung actually delivered better battery life in the testing than what they promised. In particular, Sony smartphones lasted around 21 percent higher than their promised talk time.
Our Take
There are a lot of factors at play when one tests the battery life of a smartphone. However, if Which? had the basics right in their testing, a difference of 51 percent in promised talk time battery life is staggering and one that would definitely raise some eyebrows.
Are you satisfied with the battery life of your iPhone XR?
