Former Huawei exec raises $100M angel round for his new ecommerce venture

A former executive at Chinese smartphone and telecom equipment provider Huawei unveiled his new ecommerce venture at Beijing’s annual Global Mobile Internet Conference yesterday. Liu Jiangfeng, who spent 19 years at Huawei and rose to become the president of the company’s Glory smartphone division, says he has already secured US$100 million in angel funding, according to Sina Tech. If true, that could make it the largest angel round ever in China.

Liu’s startup is called Dmall, a hyperlocal shopping app connected with large supermarkets. Within the service radius of each location, Dmall promises one-hour delivery to customers. The service radius is one to two kilometers. Each supermarket controls its own pricing, distribution, and delivery team.

Essentially, Dmall turns supermarkets into inventory warehouses. A single app will detect the user’s location and show them the stock of whichever supermarkets are in range. It’s particularly aimed at delivering fresh food products – something that more traditional ecommerce retailers and marketplaces struggle with.

Dmall is currently in closed beta, with trial operations set for May in Beijing. Expansion to Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and other cities is scheduled for later this year. Dmall has so far established a partnership with at least one major supermarket chain called Wumart, which is sort of like a knock-off Wal-Mart.

To gain early traction, the app will offer free delivery on all orders over RMB 59 (US$9.50).

On stage at GMIC, Liu said China has about 4,000 ecommerce companies. One percent of them make a profit, 4 percent break even, and 95 percent are in a deficit. He says he fully understands the difficulty of competing with giants like Alibaba and JD in the ecommerce space, but there’s still a lot of room to grow in China.

Food delivery startups have been taking off left and right in China. Beequick, a food and drink delivery startup that sources from local convenience stores, secured a US$20 million series B round of funding led by Hillhouse Capital with participation from Sequoia Capital. Nanjing-based franchise restaurant delivery app Line0 closed a US$30 million series B investment led by Tencent and followed by Sequoia Capital and Gobi Partners. Other startups with similar models include Instacart in the US and Zopnow in India.

HTC publishes Q1 2015 earnings, revenue up 25% year over year

HTC has just posted its financial results for the first quarter of 2015, showing strong improvements in overall revenue and net profit.

From January 1st to March 31st of this year, HTC earned a total revenue of $41.5 billion, which is up a massive 25% year over year. While this is roughly $1.5 billion less than the company earned in Q4 2014, HTC is still showing many signs of progress. After taxes have been taken out, HTC earned $.36 billion in net profit, or $.43 per share. HTC expects revenue in Q2 2015 to be in the range of NT$46 billion to NT$51 billion.

At the end of the 8-inch Galaxy Tab A battery is a battery to 4200. mAh is considered rich if they will use the general entertainment. Windows 10 review

Windows 10 Wow

Some very impressive stuff shown during the Microsoft Build conference webcast.

It’s given me a renewed interest in Core-M tablets from China, especially the upcoming 4:3 iPad clone, the Onda V919 (which will probably also have models from Teclast and CUBE).

My interest was also piqued by a video from Hendrickson, which is available after the break.

Clearly Core-M is more powerful than the X-series of Atom CPUs:

Compare that to Chippy’s experience with the first Z-series Atom on a small tablet:

Of course some will argue this is apples versus oranges — a Core-M tablet has more RAM, faster SSD for storage, etc. But still. In less than a year, a China tablet has much more power. Yeah, the price is higher too. Yet again: But still.

I’m not sure any tablet from China will be worth buying until Windows 10 is pre-installed. Early adopters who begin with Windows 8.x and do the free upgrade to 10 might run into the kind of problems first buyers of the Onda V975i ran into. Better to wait and make sure they’ve got all the hardware revisions shaken out first.

I think with Windows 10 we’ll see Chinese companies releasing phones with it too. Given how kick-ass Android phones from China have become, imagine the application “flexibility” of Windows 10 on a kick-ass phone connected to a large monitor. We could really be moving to that mythical time where a phone replaces a desktop for most people. And not just in their pocket — but at home, connected to a large screen.

Also: How soon will iOS and Android app developers shift their apps to Windows 10-compatible versions too? That capability is a potential market-upsetting earthquake in itself.

Same-day update: Chippy chimes in: Post-PC, ultra-mobile PC and very, very disruptive. The Windows 10 Continuum demo at BUILD 2015 was mind-blowing.

This watch is said to launch come October or November. And while we don’t know much, it’s said it will feature about 40 hours of battery life. more details are sure to come in due time.

Opinion: This would be the most expensive Android Wear device around. Admittedly, it’s probably not too smart to spend so much money on a piece of tech that will be considered old in a year. I would much rather carry around a Tag Heuer than an Apple Watch, though. At least we know this $1400 watch will look like a worthy fashion accessory.

Wow… a US-focused phone with a Mediatek processor. That’s a first! Anyways, those looking for an affordable device to get on T-Mobile now have a new option from Alcatel. This is the Alcatel OneTouch POP Astro, an LTE handset with a seriously low price and modest specs.

The device packs a 4.5-inch qHD display, a 1.5 GHz quad-core MTK6732 processor, 1 GB of RAM, 4 GB of ROM, a 5 MP camera and a 2000 mAh battery. Nothing to write home about, but the price is pretty impressive at $149.97 off-contract.

Opinion: It’s hard to recommend these phones when there are options like the Moto E out there, but this phone does have 4G LTE speeds. It could be the right phone for the super casual user, right?

T-Mobile added 1.8 million new customers to its network in Q1 2015

T-Mobile released its 1st quarter 2015 results earlier today, showing a ton of growth in the number of postpaid customers and record low postpaid phone churn. Just in the first three months of the year alone, the carrier gained 1.8 million subscribers, marking this the 8th consecutive quarter the company gained over 1 million customers. The company has also added 1.1 million branded postpaid net adds, making this the 3rd consecutive quarter adding over 1 million. Roughly 1 million of those customers were phone customers.

T-Mobile has also vastly improved its postpaid phone churn, achieving an all-time record low of 1.3%. This means that over the past year, less and less customers have jumped ship to go to another carrier. CEO John Legere explains:

We’ve had eight consecutive quarters with more than one million total net customer additions proving that customers want value. We expect to once again capture all of the industry’s postpaid phone growth in Q1 and we’ve done it while delivering an all-time record low 1.3% churn.


Assuming the number of Sprint subscribers doesn't surpass .8 million for Q1, T-Mobile will finally take the crown as the third largest mobile carrier in the U.S.​

T-Mobile now has a total of 56.8 million customers. It sold a total of 8.8 million products this quarter, 8 million of which were phones.

Quarter over quarter revenue is down .9%, mainly due to the impact of the Un-carrier’s Data Stash program. However, if we were to take out the impact of Data Stash, service revenues in the first quarter rose .9%, and 11% year over year.

While T-Mobile added more than 1 million postpaid subscribers this quarter, Verizon posted a loss of 138,000 subscribers and AT&T posted a loss of 300,000. Sprint started the quarter with just under 56 million overall subscribers, so assuming that it stays under that amount, T-Mobile will finally get to take the crown as the third largest mobile carrier in the United States.
