Alibaba’s Aliyun announces massive new support program for startups

Alibaba cloud subsidiary Aliyun announced Monday that more help is on the way for Chinese startups thanks to its new “Founder+” program. The program was created by Aliyun together with 30 venture capital firms including Zhenfund, IDG, and Innovation Works, as well as 20 research institutes and incubators and 20 marketing, distribution, and development firms. The collective effort will offer founders funding, office space (including office management resources and hardware), links with and guidance from investors, tax breaks, development units, and soft distribution and marketing services.

Free office space will reportedly be available in Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, and Wuhan for accepted startups. Aliyun will also give each founder between RMB 30,000 and RMB 400,000 (US$4,800-$64,000) in cloud-based resources, as well as free cloud training. Anyone working on an innovative startup will be eligible to apply for the program.

Aliyun operations manager Wang Ming told reporters that cloud computing is changing the way startups are founded, so with “Founder+” Aliyun wants to make founding a startup more convenient. He also said that the company hopes to add more partners to the program so that it can offer services even more of China’s startup hotspots.

Chinese education platform Genshuixue raises US$50M series A

Chinese online education platform Genshuixue announced Monday that it has raised a US$50 million series A round. The round was led by Hillhouse Capital, and reportedly values the startup at US$250 million.

Genshuixue is a website and mobile app that allows users to search for courses, both local and online, in a variety of subjects from piano to SAT prep. Once they’ve picked a type of course, users can browse all of the teachers of that subject in their area. The site includes user comments and verifies details like teachers’ professional qualifications so users can be sure of what they’re getting. Once they’re done browsing their options, users can register and pay for their classes online.

The site has been online for just under half a year, but in that time Genshuixue has signed up more than 70,000 teachers who offer more than 69,000 different classes to “millions” of students. According to founder Chen Xiangdong, thanks to Genshuixue the site’s most popular teacher is now generating millions in income.

The online education sector continues to burn white-hot in China. In just the past few weeks, several test-prep startups have raked in investments and an O2O education platformwas acquired by Dianping. Direct competitors to Genshuixue like Qingtajiao have also raised funds in recent months.

Sony announces three new SRS Bluetooth speakers

The Sony Bluetooth speaker SRS range expands with three new speakers split across different budget scales.

The SRS-X11 is a 2.4-inch cube that comes with a bag clip for portability and uses NFC for connection.

Inside is dual passive radiators and a 45mm driver so it’s small but not meek.

It costs $69 and comes in red, white and black, with blue and pink options on the way.

The SRS-X33 updates the SRS-X3 and supports NFC and Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE), which fills in the gaps on lossy formats.

It also supports the hi-res LDAC technology for lossless streaming.

Also onboard is a built-in mic and and aux-in socket.

It’ll be out May 2015 for $129 in black, blue, white and red options.

Last up is the SRS-X55, which packs in two 38mm drivers and a 58mm subwooder.

It also uses DSEE and LDAC technology, as well as NFC.

It costs $179 and comes in black.

Alaska Airlines Gets Inflight System Based on Microsoft Solutions, Windows Tablets

Microsoft announced on the official Windows blog that Alaska Airlines was upgrading its flight experience with new technology, based on Microsoft’s solutions. The fleet of airplanes will feature Windows inflight entertainment solutions and tablets.

7,000 Windows Toshiba Encore 2 tablets have been included on aircrafts. The inflight tablets are running Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 is also promised to come to these devices. The devices deployed across the Alaska Airlines fleet are operated by Skycast Solutions, Microsoft’s partner in this initiative. Security is enhanced here and the slates come bundled with movies that are still in theaters.

The tablets include a variety of services and content, including movies, TV shows, e-publications and games. The Windows models will work during the flight, with the devices recharger for the next departure. Alaska Airlines also teamed up with the digital engineering firm Ratio to integrate technologies, developer entertainment apps and embedded experience.

LeTV just founded a music company that aims to take on China’s online music industry

China’s LeTV is best known for its popular online streaming platform, but in the past year the company has really been branching out. Within that timeframe it has moved intosmartphones, film production, and electric cars. Now it’s moving into the music business too, having on Thursday announced the establishment of the LeTV Music Company in Hong Kong.

LeTV Music, which will be headed by former LeTV entertainment boss Yin Liang, is aiming for China’s music market by way of vertical integration, since it already has the technology and internet platforms to distribute smoothly to most of the country. Its music offerings are already substantial because LeTV was already producing original music video content. In fact, the company claims that it is already one of China’s biggest creators of music video content, especially 4K content. And with its mobile apps and its smart TVs already on the market, LeTV Music has an easy way onto screens both big and small across the Middle Kingdom.

According to Sina Tech, LeTV Music also plans to try its hand at disrupting the music industry model by taking an O2O approach to concerts.

One certainly can’t fault LeTV for a lack of ambition, but it’s hard not to wonder if the company might be expanding a but too quickly given the different directions it has chosen to move in over the past twelve months. LeTV has proved that it can succeed in the streaming video space, but can it handle producing films, music, smartphones, and electric cars on top of all of that?

Here’s a new an interesting Kickstarter project, one that involves a tablet called Jide Ultra Remix. The device looks a lot like the Surface tablet, only it runs Android in this case.
