HTC new hero handset codenamed Aero might debut in Q4

HTC’s next hero smartphone codenamed Aero will reportedly debut in Q4 this year. Even Blass (also known as @evleaks) delivered the news on Twitter.

The HTC Aero rumor should hardly catch anyone by surprise. Earlier this month, the CEO of HTC Cher Wang promised that a new flagship device will arrive in October.
HTC Aero will be different from the the company’s 2016 flagship. This means that HTC Aero will be a stop-gap high-end smartphone to fill the void between HTC One M9 and its successor.
There is no word on the specs of the HTC Aero. We reckon that QHD display and Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 or MediaTek Helio X20 chipset will likely be part of its specs.
With no confirmed details available on HTC Aero, we suggest that you take this rumor with a pinch of salt. We will keep an eye our for more details about the device going forward.

OnePlus 2 will be unveiled on July 27 in virtual reality

If you've been getting annoyed by OnePlus' hype campaign for its next smartphone so far, here's some good news. You only have another month of teasers to look forward to.
That's because the OnePlus 2 will finally be officially announced on July 27 at 7 PM PT. Yes, today's teaser from OnePlus concerns the date on which its next handset will be fully outed.

But wait, there's more. OnePlus is going to do "the world's first product launch in VR" on this occasion. For this purpose, the company has designed its own VR cardboard headset, starting from existing designs but tailoring the experience for the upcoming OnePlus 2.
The OnePlus Cardboard headset, pictured below, will also happily accommodate other devices up to 6 inches in size. It's said to be fast and easy to assemble, it's made from durable materials, it's more compact than other such headsets, and it's coated with a special film that repels dirt and oils. The result should be a pretty high-tech product for something (literally) made out of cardboard.

As for the OnePlus 2 launch itself, the virtual reality experience will let you "stand" next to the OnePlus team and other fans as the new flagship is unveiled. You'll be able to look around and check the phone out in an entirely new way, and perhaps even find some hidden Easter eggs while you're at it. More details are definitely coming soon.

John Legere becomes a superhero in T-Mobile’s #DefeatDuopoly campaign video

Ever since John Legere took over the CEO position at T-Mobile, the wireless carrier began to really shake things up in the wireless industry. Legere has never been one to keep his thoughts to himself, and that’s apparent in T-Mobile’s new wireless spectrum campaign.

T-Mobile will be taking part in the gigantic 600MHz wireless spectrum auction next year, and by the looks of it, Verizon and AT&T will likely dominate the auction. This will in turn give the two carriers control over most of the low-frequency spectrum that the FCC is auctioning off, which arguably isn’t fair for the littler guys. This happened last year during the AWS-3 spectrum auction, as well.

T-Mobile’s goal is to get the FCC to reserve half of the spectrum for carriers who don’t own as much low-band spectrum, while AT&T and Verizon are lobbying for the Commission to keep the rules as they are. This is quite the daunting task for the Un-carrier, which is why T-Mobile has just launched its new #DefeatDuopoly campaign in hopes to get consumers on its side.

John Legere released a video on Twitter last night, which you can find here:

KA-POW!! That is the sound of us saving wireless competition! We need your help to #DefeatDuopoly! Watch this! https://t.co/R56ap3BZkW

— John Legere (@JohnLegere) June 23, 2015

The video portrays AT&T and Verizon as the “Duopoly”, and T-Mo’s John Legere as the superhero that swoops in to save the wireless industry. While it’s obviously meant to get consumers on board with the #DefeatDuopoly movement, there is a serious message behind it. If you agree with what T-Mobile has to say, Legere is asking you to tweet @FCC using the #DefeatDuopoly tag. The FCC is voting on the final rules for the big auction on Thursday, July 16th, so there’s still time to get your voice heard.

Amazon Echo now available for everyone, without an invite

Do you guys remember the Amazon Echo? It’s that awesome smart speaker announced by the popular retailer last November. It wowed most of the industry and proved to be one of the coolest digital assistants around, but there was one huge problem: no one could buy it!

Amazon was pretty much beta testing the Echo by releasing it only to customers who got a hold of an invite. Thankfully, this era is now left in the past and, as of today, any person can buy the Amazon Echo. No invites or cumbersome processes are required. Just head over to the Amazon Echo page and buy yours for $179.99. It will be in stock on July 14th, so you will have to wait a bit before it ships.

That $179 price point sure isn’t the cheapest, but you will find the Echo has a lot to offer and may be worth your hard-earned cash. This is more than your simple wireless speaker; which, by the way, some people pay the same amount or more for.

The Amazon Echo harnesses the power of the internet to become one of the coolest digital assistants found outside of actual smart devices. You can literally talk to the Echo and ask it questions about cooking, news, the weather, traffic, sports, shopping and more.

The Echo does more than plain information, though. You can command it to add something to your shopping list, purchase something from Amazon, make a reminder in your calendar, add something to your to-do list or even control your home automation smart products.

How does this all relate to Android? Well, there is a nifty mobile app you can use to get quick access to everything related to your Amazon Echo. All your reminders, calendar information and other features will be accessible from your smartphone or tablet.

Pretty neat, right? I am not sure I am willing to spend that much money on a speaker when I have Google Now available at all times, but I can see some people falling in love with this thing. It’s easy to operate, it’s smart and it can even tell you jokes! Who’s buying?

Report: millions of Uber’s China rides are faked

A new report on Chinese tech site Tencent Tech suggests that millions of Uber’s booked rides in the country are fakes – fraudulent fares reported by drivers in order to collect Uber’s high driver subsidies.

Faking fares – which some drivers refer to as “acupuncture” – works like this: first, you buy an Uber driver account. There are plenty available for sale on sites like Taobao, and many even come with helpful “how to fake rides” guides. Once you’ve got your account, you partner up with a passenger using the consumer Uber app. With location services turned off, the passenger submits a fare from point A to point B. You drive the fare with no passenger, return the money paid by the passenger, and then split the driver subsidies Uber will pay you – which may be several times the price of the fare itself.

This “acupuncture” phenomenon it doesn’t only affect Uber. But drivers told Tencent Tech that because Uber’s subsidies are the highest, virtually all of the faking right now is taking place on Uber’s platform because it is the most profitable.

This isn’t new, of course, but what is new is the numbers. Tencent Tech found that on Taobao alone, there have been around 200,000 Uber driver accounts bought and sold. Assuming that each account is used for around 5 fake trips (which may be conservative), that’s a million faked Uber rides via Taobao alone. And according to the report, Taobao is not the largest source of Uber driver account purchases – far more are sold by phone or in QQ groups. All in all, it seems that millions of Chinese rides booked via Uber probably never happened.

Uber is aware of this behavior, of course, but it’s in a bit of a strange position. On the one hand, it is essentially being stolen from by “drivers” who aren’t actually taking passengers anywhere. But on the other hand, the increased rides count that all of these fake drivers provide helps bolster Uber’s China stats when it’s looking for investment – like it is right now. This week, the American company unveiled some rule tweaks aimed at controlling the situation, including changes to the subsidy system and how pickups work. It is also putting additional effort into banning fake accounts as it uncovers them, and Tencent’s report suggests that these efforts have led to a reduction in the number of fake drivers.

Uber reportedly does have the technological capability to shut down fake rides entirely, but is concerned that doing so would slow its genuine organic growth because being overly strict could result in false positives, banning real drivers and passengers who aren’t cheating the system.

Xiaomi’s Lin Bin Questions Large Phones

Xiaomi’s Lin Bin Questions Large Phones

LinBinBigPhoneWeibo
Machine translation makes it difficult to tell if he was joking or serious.
But this raises an issue I’ve wanted to discuss: Phone sizes.
Phones were originally made small because they had basically two functions: Voice calling and texting.
The size of the keyboard actually dictated how tiny a phone could be to accommodate human fingers (or thumbs).
Once the iPhone “reinvented the phone,” it became a lot more. Basically it became a pocket computer and calling and texting were reduced to apps.
The iPhone made it possible to finally access the full Internet, not the pathetic crippled versions offered by the Palm Treo, Windows Mobile, or — god help us all — WAP.
Being able to comfortably view the Internet now dictated the size of the phone.
No one wanted this:
PalmVeer
The Palm Veer was the worst of both worlds: A screen too small to view the Net, with a keyboard too small to comfortably use.
Instead people want this:
iPhone6Plus
For myself, I find anything below 5.5-inches to be too small — and, depending on the design of the phone, even that sometimes seems small to me.
I think bigger phones are better.
But not this:

Samsung Galaxy Phone A8

Samsung Galaxy Phone A8

As we exclusively detailed last month, the Galaxy A8 should feature a 5.7-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display, an octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16-megapixel and 5-megapixel rear and front cameras, 16GB of internal storage, and a 3,050 mAh battery. The phone will also have a touch fingerprint sensor, run Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, and have an extremely thin 5.9 mm metallic frame.

The too-large rounded corners don’t please my eyes, but otherwise this is the phone I want.
Unless Samsung gets stupid and prices it too high.

Quiet time: Phaiton BT 100 NC wireless headphones promise best noise-cancelling system

Phaiton claims its Phaiton BT 100 NC wireless headphones have one of the most effective noise-cancelling systems available.
As well as the company’s Active Noise Cancellation system, the Bluetooth headphones also have a vibrate function to buzz when the user’s smartphone receives an alert or message, and they can connect up to two other Bluetooth devices.
The ANC blocks 95% of low-frequency noises, including sub-1KHz sound.
ANC can be turned on and off to save battery – playback is 12 hours without ANC and 7.5 hours with it on.
Once the battery’s died it can still be used wired, just not with the noise cancelling.
The headphones are due out this month in black or white options and will cost $119.

DxO One iPhone Lightning Port camera for 20.2MP RAW shots

The DxO One rotating mini camera for the Apple iPhone is a smallish attachment that shoots RAW images with its 20.2MP one-inch CMOS BSI sensor and f/1.8 32mm lens.
Once the DxO app is launched, the iPhone screen acts as the viewfinder with DSLR-style controls.
The lens works independently from the body and as such can rotate 60-degrees forward and backward.
The camera can be used stand-alone and stores the high quality images on SD card within the body. When attached to an iPhone, however, a JPEG version is saved on the phone so sharing can be dealt with right away.
The DxO camera will ship in September but can be pre-ordered now for $599.
